NINTENDO DOESN’T EVEN have an HD capable console as yet, but the company has today announced its intention to launch a 3D capable handheld gaming device that doesn’t require you to wear any glasses. The 3DS as Nintendo is calling it for now is set to be unveiled at E3 which kicks off on the 15th of June.
Currently there isn’t much information to go on, as Nintendo only released a short press relase on its Japanese website (PDF) stating that it “will launch [the] Nintendo 3DS (temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011”. However the key message, which is bolded in the press release, states that “games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses”, which surely sounds like a killer feature.
The 3DS will also be backwards compatible with current Nintendo DS and DSi games, although these will most likely not work in 3D. We’re also curious as to what “3D effects” mean, as it doesn’t say that the games will be entirely in 3D. It seems like we’ll have to wait until E3 to find out exactly what Nintendo means as the company is set to announce “additional details” during the show, but this doesn’t mean that the 3DS will actually launch at E3.S|A
