IF YOU READ Charlie’s piece on Tuesday about the ability of Gigabyte’s new X58 UD9 board being able to deliver 1500W to the CPU socket and figured that’s something you need, then you’ll be glad to know that the same technology is being rolled out across its entire range. The feature is called Unlocked Power and allows for more power to be delivered to the CPU socket, although only the UD9 can do 1500W.
The first two boards after the UD9 to get the Unlocked Powere treatment is the GA-X58A-UD7 and GA-X58A-UD5, so make sure you look for a revision 2.0 board of these models if this is your cup of tea. You won’t get 24-phases on these boards though, but 16 power phases should still be more than enough for most “normal” users.
Gigabyte said that Unlocked Power will be trickling down its range of boards, although the company didn’t say how far down this feature will go. This is great news for overclockers that are looking for a board that they can use to really push their CPUs with, although sufficient cooling is of course also needed or you’ll run into some serious problems.S|A
