ALTHOUGH WE EXPECTED to see a lot more SATA 6Gbps SSD drives at Computex, it seems like some manufacturers are holding off, waiting for new SSD controllers, before they launch their new products with SATA 6Gbps support. Nonetheless, AData was showing off a model based on the Marvell controller and it didn’t disappoint.
The S501 as the new series is called will be available in sizes up to 512GB which means we might see even better performance numbers than the 426MB/s sequential read speed that the 128GB managed to produce. The write speed, close to 212MB/s is less impressive, although far from slow. The 4k write speed of 45.5MB/s is far more impressive and, for whatever reason, the read speed fell behind on this test at a mere 23MB/s.
The biggest problem with SSDs at the moment is the relatively high prices, but hopefully new more advanced manufacturing processes will help bring down the pricing over the next 12 months or so. The AData drive is a taste of things to come and we’re expecting to see much faster SSDs later this year and early next year once new SSD controllers become available to the SSD manufacturers.S|A
