NVIDIA HAS BEEN a little bit behind AMD when it comes to adding multi-display support on a single card, but it seems like one of its partners have gone and at least made things a bit more interesting. Zotac has announced its GeForce GTX 460 3DP card today which features no less than three DisplayPort connectors as well as a DVI port for some quad display action for resolutions of up to 6400×1200.
The 6400×1200 – or 4800×1200 resolution if only using the DisplayPort connectors – seems to be intended for gaming, but oddly enough it appears that Zotac’s “tweaked” design limits the DisplayPorts on the GTX 460 3DP to 1600×1200 while the dual-link DVI port manages to output 2560×1600. Considering 4:3 displays went out of fashion with the display makers some years ago now we can’t but help to wonder what Zotac was thinking.
Sure, it’s great to be able to connect four displays, but with these kind of peculiar limitations it’s of little use to most users as standard screen resolutions are either 1920×1080 or 1920×1200 and the latter isn’t even all that common today. It’s possible that 1920×1080 is also supported, but nothing in the specifications is suggesting this. It’s possible that the specifications on Zotac’s website are wrong, as there’s no mention of any screen resolution for a single DisplayPort in the press release.
The rest of the card is a fairly standard GTX 460 which a slightly faster core clock of 710MHz and Shaders at 1420MHz. The 1GB of GDDR5 memory is clocked at the stock 1800MHz or 3.6GHz effectively. The card is supplied with a copy of Price of Persia: The Forgotten Sands as well as a selection of power adaptors and a DVI to D-sub adapter. No pricing was announced but we’d expect the new card to be available shortly.S|A
