JUST WHEN YOU thought we were done with Gigabyte stories for the day, they pull another oddity out of their hat, an AMD Yukon mini-ITX board. This passive board is half way between the Atom machines and a full blown CPU.

The board is called the GA-2AIEL5, and it has a Sempron 210U running at 1.5GHz, basically a single core K8 CPU. The mobo is an ATI RS690E coupled to a SB600 southbridge, nothing fancy, just functional. It is very last gen, but has decent HD decode and sound capabilities.

While the board sports HDMI out, it is aimed at Point of Sale (POS) systems, a curious match. Then again, passively cooled PCs, along with an integrated CF reader and old school serial ports have embedded all over them.

What is the point of this board? It could be a decent media center, but the more modern 790 chipsets will do a much better job of that. The GA-2AIEL5 will make a great kiosk or embedded device station that needs more than the basics. It should be a step up from Atom boards in both CPU and GPU power while staying very affordable.S|A
